December has brought a range of announcements from Microsoft regarding pricing and licensing. While the news includes a mix of updates, there are positive aspects that stand out in the overall impact.
Pricing Adjustments (5-6% Reduction)
Starting February 1, 2025, Microsoft will reduce cloud pricing for customers transacting in British Pound (GBP) by 5-6%. This adjustment reflects Microsoft’s semi-annual process of aligning global prices with the US Dollar (USD), ensuring consistent pricing across currencies and regions. This decrease accounts for exchange rate fluctuations and provides some much-welcome relief for UK customers.
Price Increases for Monthly Billing
However, not all updates are as favourable. Beginning April 1, 2025, Microsoft will increase pricing for monthly billing plans under CSP, MCA-E, and “Buy Online” under annual-term commitments. These monthly billing plans will now cost 5% more than their annual upfront payment counterparts.
Price Increase for Microsoft Teams Phone.
Since its launch in 2017, Microsoft Teams Phone has transformed communication for organisations worldwide. To align with the continuous innovations and enhanced capabilities introduced, Microsoft will adjust the annual billing price for Teams Phone standalone plans, effective April 1, 2025.
This marks the first pricing update since Teams Phone’s inception and reflects the added value they have delivered , enabling flexible, intelligent, and reliable calling experiences directly within Teams. There are currently no pricing changes for customers who purchase Teams Phone as part of Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5 annual term subscriptions with annual billing.
Whilst this news is a bit disappointing, it is important to point out that Teams Phone has been a Gartner Magic Quadrant leader for Unified Communications as a Service for six consecutive years and that this is the first ever price increase for this product since 2016.
Flexible Billing for Microsoft 365 Copilot
Effective December 1, 2024, Microsoft introduced a monthly billing option for its Copilot products, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot for Sales, and Copilot for Service. This option is aimed at improving cash flow flexibility by allowing customers to commit to an annual subscription but pay monthly which pay also align with other monthly billed subscriptions customers may already have.
However, customers opting for this monthly payment structure will incur a 5% premium compared to those paying annually upfront. Additionally, a monthly commitment option for Copilot, is still unavailable and the annual subscription requirement remains mandatory for these Copilot products.
What This Means for You
The pricing reduction for GBP transactions is a welcome move, especially as organisations navigate tighter budgets. However, the increase in monthly billing costs may prompt many to reassess billing preferences.
