Dynamics GP is in an interesting place. In one sense, it is still an active and supported Microsoft Dynamics product, but on the other hand, it is the forgotten child.

Microsoft has completely refreshed Dynamics AX and Dynamics NAV to launch Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations and Dynamics 365 Business Central. This refresh and move to the cloud is something that Microsoft has done with almost every product that now forms the basis of their modern product suite, so where does this leave Dynamics GP?

Dynamics GP Roadmap

Microsoft has released a roadmap for Dynamics GP suggesting that it will be getting some new features and updates, including the ability to access what they are calling intelligent cloud insights. However, there is no mention of a move to the cloud.

When considering how much overlap there was with Dynamics GP and Dynamics NAV this makes sense. They both served the same market, offering a similar range of capability. However, it looks like Dynamics NAV was Microsoft’s preferred platform.

What does this mean for users of Dynamics GP?

For users of Dynamics GP, this represents an interesting challenge, on the one hand, they could stay on their current system (depending on when it goes out of support), or they could upgrade to a newer version of Dynamics GP (depending on how heavily customised your instance is). But is this the best decision for your organisation? Are you missing out on the next generation of technology and the benefits this brings?

We would be surprised if Dynamics GP is continued to be supported in its current format. An alternative solution available to users of Dynamics GP is to upgrade to Dynamics 365. Dynamics 365 Business Central would be the obvious step, offering a similar range of capability but with all the benefits of a modern cloud-based solution.
